Auburn, Alabama (4 pm. - March 16th, 2020) -- Lee County Humane Society (LCHS) is continuing to take extensive precautions in order to protect the health of our staff, fosters, volunteers, and supporters during the current situations surrounding the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the resulting COVID-19 illness. After discussions with our Board of Directors and assessing our shelter’s current level of capacity, LCHS has decided to limit as much contact as possible.
Adoptable Animals
With this decision, if you have placed an adoption hold on an animal, please contact the shelter at (334) 821-3222 to schedule a pick up time once the animal is ready to leave with you. The same instructions apply to anyone scheduled to pick up a foster pet from the shelter.
At this time, we ask that you view our website to see all available animals for adoption. If you are interested in a particular pet, please email the shelter staff at lchs1140@leecountyhumane.org with the name of the animal and a date/time you can schedule to meet the animal at the shelter. We ask this in order to keep our staff and volunteers as healthy as possible so that we are able to continue caring for the homeless pets in the shelter.
Stray and Feral Intakes
LCHS asks the community to consider its capacity levels before bringing in a stray animal. Please try to reunite the lost pet youself by holding on to the pet and posting pictures online with the sex, estimated age, and where he/she was found in the area. Recommended Facebook pages to post to include Opelika-Auburn Lost and Found Pets, as well as the Lost Pets of Lee/Russell & Muscogee County. At this time, LCHS asks that no ferals be trapped and brought into the shelter in order to reduce the number of intakes coming into the shelter.

Owner Surrenders
To surrender your pet, you must call ahead and speak to a manager on duty. For more information about rehoming a pet, visit our website at leecountyhumane.org/owner-surrender.
At this time, LCHS’ goal is to decrease the number of intakes for now as well as make sure our staff stays healthy. LCHS does not want to make any unnecessary decisions if it becomes limited in space for new intakes. The shelter has a huge need for people willing to foster as the shelter is already approaching maximum capacity and adoption rates are expected to decrease.
