COVID Census Graph
A new version of our COVID-19 Census and Ventilator Use is attached. You will notice it has 3 lines on it now as we were asked to include “positive cases only.” The trends are largely the same, with just a few variations. You will also notice that the difference between the “positive” and “positive plus pending” was as high as around 30 earlier this month. That gap was because we were trending upward in number of hospitalizations plus there were fewer commercial labs available at the time and the testing turnaround time was longer. The gap has narrowed, but still ebbs and flows based on patients presenting for treatment at EAMC and EAMC-Lanier.
EAMC Statement on Governor Ivey re-opening Alabama
“We believe Governor Ivey’s decision today to gradually re-open Alabama’s economy is wise. While we all want to return to life as we knew it three months ago, doing so in phases is a more measured approach that will allow for adjustments, if needed. Her stay-at-home orders for the past three or more weeks have been very beneficial here in east Alabama. We had 22 COVID patients on ventilators in early April and are currently at 7. Also, we were receiving about 1000 calls a day to our COVID call center that was open 24 hours a day. Now, we have been able to reduce our call center to regular business hours and only had 213 calls yesterday. Our COVID hospitalizations have also dropped since then, but are still not as low as we would like. With the changes announced today, we do expect to see slight increases in our statistics, but not back to where we were. However, we all more fully understand COVID-19 now and how to help protect ourselves. Just like every community in America and the world, we have to adapt to the new normal. With the tremendous support we have received over the past two months, we know our community stands ready to adjust and move forward cautiously.”
Visitor Restrictions
When Governor Ivey’s “Stay-at-Home” orders are replaced by her “Safer-at-Home” orders on Thursday, EAMC and EAMC-Lanier will keep their visitor restrictions in place. The restrictions, which only allow for 1-2 designated family members in specific situations (childbirth, pediatric patient, and when a patient’s death is imminent) will remain until further notice so as to protect patients and staff. EAMC will announce when these restrictions change and there will likely still be limitations.
Mask Reminder
As EAMC and area physicians begin to see more patients in person, we kindly ask that anyone entering a medical facility wear a mask that covers both nose and mouth. The mask should remain on while you are inside the building unless a physician or staff member asks you to remove it.
