Auburn High Boys Soccer Team To Play For State Title

AHSAA State Soccer Championships Class 7A Boys’ Semifinals

Auburn 1, McGill-Toolen Catholic 0 Auburn (14-4) and McGill-Toolen Catholic(13-9-5) battled for almost 70 minutes Friday before junior midfielder Liam Weikart posted only goal in the Class 7A Boys’ State Soccer Championship semifinal match at John Hunt Soccer Complex to give the Tigers 1-0 win.

Coach Bill Ferguson’s team advanced to Saturday’s state finals with the victory. The Rebels (18-5-1) beat Mountain Brook in the other semifinal match to set up the championship scheduled for noon in the final day of the 28th annual AHSAA Championships.

The NFHS Network is live-streaming all state soccer finals. Cullman High School’s NFHS School Broadcast Program is producing the events.

Weikart nailed his goal at 68:52 and the Tigers’ defense, anchored by junior goalkeeper Payton Segrest, did the rest. Segrest had 11 saves. McGill-Toolen, coached by Nate Nicholas, limited Auburn to just three shots on goal. Goalkeeper William Blake had two saves.


Vestavia Hills 1, Mountain Brook 0 The Rebels downed Mountain Brook with a second-half goal provided by sophomore midfielder Tony Shaw at the 57.42 mark. The 1-0 victory assured Vestavia Hills’ boys a berth in the Class 7A championship match versus Auburn at noon Saturday. 

The Vestavia girls earned spot in the 7A girls’ finals as well and will play McGill-Toolen Catholic at 10 a.m. in the title match. The NFHS Network will live-stream all finals Saturday with Cullman High School’s NFHS School Broadcast Program producing the events.

Coach Leo Harlan’s Rebels (18-5-1) kept Mountain Brook (21-6-3) on its heels, limiting the Spartans of Coach Joe Webb to three shots the entire contest and no shots on goal. Mountain Brook’s defensive effort was also outstanding -- limiting Vestavia Hills to only two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Reid Freeman had one save for Mountain Brook.

Vestavia Hills has won four boys’ state soccer titles with the last one coming in 2014. The Rebels also have four girls’ state titles with the most recent coming in 2016.
