OPELIKA, Ala. – Today, Thursday, December 12, the contractor working on the intersection conversion to a roundabout at Society Hill Road/Lee Road 054 and Gateway Drive will be directing a major change in the traffic patterns at the intersection.
On this date, the contractor will reveal roadway signs that will direct the traffic entering the intersection to proceed as a roundabout and barrels will be placed in a circle in the intersection for traffic to proceed around. The existing stop signs will be removed at this time as well.
This roundabout and surrounding areas will still be under construction, but the normal rules of a roundabout will be in place. Traffic approaching the intersection will look to the left and will yield to any vehicles in the circle approaching.
Once traffic to the left is clear, the vehicles enter into the circle in a counterclockwise direction until the exiting roadway is reached. As traffic exits the circle, caution will still be needed as workers and equipment may still be present.
We anticipate minor delays as the traffic gets used to traveling in the new pattern, but there will be flaggers and worker directing traffic as the conversion is underway. As always, we are encouraging the traveling public to use caution and patience as they drive through the construction zone.
Workers and construction equipment will be in close proximity of the roadway and there are some occasions where the traffic will be off pavement onto a gravel detour along the side of the roadway.
