On Wednesday, August 2, 2017 the Auburn Police Division arrested Demetrious Andre Newell Jr, age 25 from Cusseta on a warrant charging him with murder.
The arrest stems from an investigation by Auburn Police into the shooting death of Anthony Jamal Davis, which occurred at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Foster Street on Sunday night.
Further investigation into the homicide resulted in Newell being developed as a suspect and subsequently identified as being responsible for shooting Davis after an altercation, causing his death. Detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest and he surrendered himself to officers at the Auburn Police Division. Newell was transported to the Lee County Jail where he remains in custody on a $150,000 bond.

On Monday, July 31, 2017 the Auburn Police Division and the Lee County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identity of the victim fatally shot Sunday, July 30th as Anthony Jamal Davis, age, 28 from Auburn. Preliminary investigation into the incident indicates that Davis was shot and killed during an altercation. The case remains under investigation by the Auburn Police Division, State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Lee County Coroner’s Office.

On Sunday, July 30, 2017 at approximately 9:45 p.m. Auburn Police received a shots fired call at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Foster Street. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered an unresponsive male, lying in a grassy field behind the apartments suffering from an apparent gunshot injury. The victim, a 28 year old male from Auburn, was treated by paramedics, but unfortunately died at the scene as a result of his injuries. He was pronounced deceased by Chief Deputy Lee County Coroner Gene Manning at 11:10 p.m. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The death is being investigated as a homicide by the Auburn Police Division.
