Brantley Gilbert teamed up with the God’s Country hosts to deliver a powerful rendition of a Jamey Johnson ballad during a recent episode of the podcast. Reid Isbell said he had “chills” from the trio’s cover on the show. Gilbert joked in a comment on Instagram: “I’m telling my kids we were [Rascal Flatts] and I’m Gary 🤣,” referring to lead vocalist Gary LeVox. Together, they covered “In Color,” which Johnson released on his 14-track album, That Lonesome Song, in 2008.
Gilbert spoke about his life and career when he appeared on God’s Country, hosted by Reid and his brother, Dan Isbell. The “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” artist shared the emotional story of how his wife, Amber Cochran Gilbert, was nearly the “one that got away.” Now, however, they’ve been married since 2015 and share son Barrett Hardy-Clay, 6, and daughter Braylen Hendrix, 5. On Mother’s Day, Gilbert revealed his wife is pregnant with Baby No. 3.
“Brantley Gilbert dives in head first with what he's mad at and turns out, it's little league baseball parents. He shares his journey of music, sobriety, being a landowner, and becoming a dad. The guys share their tattoo stories, including how one of Reid's is completely upside down, but he didn't realize it until it was too late. The episode ends with a Jamey Johnson cover and Brantley's One That Got Away, which had all three of them in tears to end the show.”
Dan and Reid — who have written music for Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Scotty McCreery, Jon Pardi, Lainey Wilson and others — started their weekly podcast this year. Guests appearing on the show so far include HARDY, Dustin Lynch, Colbie Caillat and others.
“One of our favorite things about country music has always been how intertwined it is with the outdoors,” Dan and Reid Isbell said in a statement when God’s Country launched. They hope to “bring the outdoor enthusiast or country music lover an up close and personal look into the minds of some of the best songwriters and artists of the genre — a place where they can be honest about struggles, relationships, their connection to the outdoors, the music business, family, whatever they feel comfortable talking about. We can’t wait to see where this partnership will lead and who this podcast will reach.”
